Being locals, it can be hard to surprise us. On the other hand we also find ourselves falling victim to routine, returning to the same ol’ haunts over and over again. So it was through an effort to help our son learn to navigate traffic on his bicycle better that we were pleased to discover Pete’s! Near the end of the Harford Pier on the left in Avila Beach, Pete’s welcomed halfway through our 8 mile ride from the Bob Jones Trail at Ontario Road out past the main beach, dog-friendly Poly beach and past the boatyard and campgrounds. If you drive, park in the Old Port parking lot and stroll past the seals and sealions to the cute bungalow restaurant and you will find a fantastic fresh fish market on one side with a great Mexican influenced outdoor cafe on the other. You can buy crab, oysters or fresh fish to go or you can have the chef cook it for you and eat there. On this particular day we purchased a dozen oysters which we happily slurped down after the fish market staff opened them for us and gave us all the fixin’s — while we waited for our orders of fish and chips (fresh caught that day) and fish tacos (likewise). With a side of beer and some mellow music in the sunshine of a perfect Avila afternoon it was a great discovery — however it was near the end of the Summer season and we haven’t yet returned … hey honey what a great idea for the weekend!
