And an even bigger treat is to have a local children’s book author in our midst! RJ Fish released a funny, imaginative and colorful story earlier this Spring entitled “When Is It Going To Rain My Favorite Flavor?” With a seven year old in our household we know exactly how imaginative they can be. Everyday car rides to the grocery store can be peppered with questions like: “Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could just fly to the store instead?” Or ” I wonder what the sky tastes like?” RJ captured this same endless imagination in his main character, a precocious boy who ponders eating his toes because they look so rosy and sweet after a bath. He goes from his morning orange juice which “makes me smile, makes me loose, like a rubber goose” to exclaiming “Why, Oh WHY?” when his favorite flavors don’t drip from the sky.
This fun book explores all of the colors of the rainbow and their possible flavors from “Greenish” to Indigo and everything in between until the sky finally does decide to cooperate with the boy and rain a beautiful rainbow on his tongue to which he says “My, oh MY!”
The book is whimsical, imaginative and illustrated in a way that gives a kid the feeling that someone just like him wrote it — fantastic for inspiring them to put their own imaginings on paper. “When Is It Going To Rain My Favorite Color” captures the essence of it’s reader and how they put ideas together. It makes me think how lovely it would be to be a kid again and stick out my tongue to find out if a snowflake really tastes like powdered sugar… Thank you RJ Fish and Jack Moore for the enjoyable escape from my ordinary mom-thoughts!
