FrutiLand El Casa del Sabor – The best flavors from Mexico City.

Having lived here my entire life, I can tell you that driving down Grand Avenue with one of my long-time friends can be a walk down memory lane. And sometimes old memories die hard. That place was such-in-such and that was an empty lot, etc. etc. We tend to refer to businesses by names they had two decades ago.

So it was with great surprise one evening when I was looking for something new to try for dinner with my family that I found that the highest-rated restaurant on Grand Avenue in Arroyo Grande is a tiny little road-side stand called FrutiLand El Casa del Sabor. Brilliantly colored and right down town near the Halcyon/Grand Avenue intersection I had always thought “that used to be such-and-such” but never even thought to stop. It had been a greasy burger joint and my old-timer brain had failed to elevate it beyond that description.

So it took the miracle of brave co-workers always in search of the best tacos to convince me to make a stop one Friday afternoon. Bustling with activity inside, the helpful man at the order counter navigated us through ordering a delicious fresh Seafood salad, an enormous grilled Torta, and a plate of fresh blue-corn carne asada tacos. The Salad was so big it was served in a mixing bowl. The torta was easily the diameter of a dinner plate, and the tacos were a plateful in and of themselves. Everything, was fresh — even the delicious Agua Fresca drink that one of my team ordered — Strawberry and as big as a an XL milkshake! The fresh salsa, avocado, tortillas and tender asada meat marinated just perfectly were a delight. And the owners and their staff were so inviting and gracious. Although we had perfect conditions for a nice patio experience this is definitely somewhere to try when you just want a yummy, fresh take-home meal or lunch no matter the weather.It’s no surprise that this restaurant of humble character has built such a star-studded online reputation. Their food is delicious, flavorful, fresh and not processed — a perfect combination for today’s modern tastebuds looking for a little bit of Mexico City here in the heart of Arroyo Grande!
