Ada’s Fish House in Pismo Beach

A word that has been frequently thrown about since that fateful week in mid-March when California shut down to flatten the curve is “pivot”. Business owners are encouraged to embrace the new normal, shift their practices and “pivot” to a new direction embracing the current “situation” and restrictions. Watching our favorite business owners grapple with the guidelines and mandates, rules and permissions has been tough – and we have made small efforts to help when we can. Ordering lunch for our Zoom meetings, supporting a different restaurant each week for #takeouttuesday and ordering everything from gifts to flowers locally for curbside pick-up.

One business that has literally defined the phrase “doing the best with what we can do” is Ada’s Fish House – sister seafood restaurant to Rosa’s Italian restaurant and kitty-corner to the established business. When you can’t have what you want, it is literally something that you cannot stop obsessing over – and obsessed we were with Ada’s authentic Lobster Roll sandwich. Chef Doug MacMillan flies in Maine Lobster for these stuffed “rolls” served either buttered and toasted or cold “salad-style” – and we wanted one. Lucky for us, the first week of the shutdown Doug and his wife Shannon had a plan – they had a menu for pick-up or delivery complete with your favorite cocktail (one silver-lining of the shelter-at-home mandate is the loosening of the takeout rules when it comes to liquor). With the ability to offer their amazing cocktail menu, Ada’s immediately began offering their famous cocktail offerings to go along with your “at home Ada’s experience.”

The process was as smooth as their creamy clam chowder – pull up the menu on their web site, phone in the order, park in the parking lot and enter one-at-a-time through the backdoor. Employees wearing masks – and sanitizing the payment process. It was 10 minutes and we were home with warm deliciousness and a tasty old-fashioned to enjoy as well. Thank goodness that the MacMillan’s have seamlessly “pivoted” – allowing us the yumminess, even when we can’t enjoy their dining room and their hospitality. Try them tonight – or next #takeouttuesday!
