For the best sushi in Shell Beach–and, perhaps, the Five Cities–look no further than Kanpai. Located on Shell Beach Road near Spyglass Inn and Dolphin Bay Resort, Kanpai is the go-to spot for locals and visitors alike.
While I definitely recommend making a reservation or calling ahead as they can get busy on weekends, sometimes you’ll get lucky and walk in easily. Part of the reason I love Kanpai is because it rises to any occasion: a casual dinner when you just don’t want to cook, the perfect end to a sun-drenched beach day, or a romantic date night. With no pretence and the friendliest staff, Kanpai is there whenever you want them.
Make sure to start off right with a couple appetizers! A family favorite is the Spicy Garlic Edamame, steamed edamame beans smothered in a rich and slightly spicy sauce. For a sneak peek at the incredible fish dishes, try the Hamachi Carpaccio or really any Nigiri or Sashimi options.
My favorite roll is the Diablo Canyon Roll (spicy tuna and deep fried green onion topped with yellowtail, avocado, and yuzu citrus sauce) but every roll I’ve tried has been delicious. Or, if someone in your family isn’t really a fish fan, there are plenty of options like udon, ramen, and grilled chicken and veggies. The “Cheers!” tasting menu is a fun date night option, including eight different selections to share.
