The 2026 Morro Bay Kite Festival is April 24-26! Head over to Morro Rock for a free and family friendly weekend, watching the kites fly or flying your own!
Take advantage of the famously windy beach, which some professional kite flyers have said is the best kite-flying wind in the world, and enjoy the simple beauty of flying a kite! The sky will be dotted with a variety of colorful kites, so even if you don’t fly your own you can relax in the sand and listen to the waves as you watch the sky.
All skill levels are welcome here, and 500 kites will be provided to kids on Saturday, April 25! If you’re looking for an easy, free, screen-free weekend activity, this is the perfect opportunity.
The festival goes all weekend, starting with an after-sunset flight Friday evening, and continuing all day Saturday and Sunday. It is of course weather dependent, but it’s a good bet that even if the morning is less than breezy the wind will pick up later in the day.
To keep this event green, the city recommends carpooling or biking as much as possible. There is lots of free parking available near the beach, so bring a friend and ride together!
