Central Coast animal lovers have the chance to support the Woods Humane Society on June 24th from 2-6pm at the Avila Beach Golf Resort while trying out mac and cheese creations as local chefs compete for the title of “Best Mac and Cheese on the Central Coast!”
Proceeds for the 10th Annual Macaroni & Cheese Festival will be donated to the AGM Community Partners which will benefit the Woods Humane Society.
The staff at Woods Humane Society do a great job every day finding loving homes for pets, helping end pet overpopulation through spay/neuter efforts, offering canine obedience classes, and providing humane education opportunities for children.
The animal shelter relies on the dedication of volunteers and the generosity of donors to improve the lives of animals throughout our community — which is why your support is needed at the Mac & Cheese Fest!
I volunteered at Woods several years ago and have first-hand knowledge of how the staff treat and care for the dogs and cats before they find their forever homes. My service included helping Trainer Michelle Rizzi walk sheltered dogs around the facility located just north of San Luis Obispo – some had never even walked on a leash before. It was amazing to see the positive changes in the dogs from when they were brought into the shelter to the day they were taken to their forever home. The two dogs I remember most fondly were named Oso and Del.
Oso was a husky mix and he was the sweetest boy. He would get so excited whenever he saw me because he knew he was going for a walk. I wanted to adopt him, but we already had two dogs at home, and he didn’t get along with other dogs. But a couple came in one day who were a perfect fit for him – it brought me so much joy to know he found his forever family! Months later they mailed a letter with an update and pictures. They wrote the letter as if Oso wrote it himself – thanking Woods for taking such good care of him as he waited for his new life. He looked very happy in the pictures.
Then there was Del. He was a senior black lab with diabetes, hip dysplasia and several other ailments. Many people looking to adopt a pet are seeking younger, healthier pets. But an elderly woman found Del to be the perfect fit for her, saying she had similar health issues and thought they could help each other deal with them together.
