If you haven’t been to Sensorio in Paso Robles yet, you’re definitely missing out. One of California’s largest immersive art exhibitions, Sensorio is an unforgettable experience.
Set in the rolling hills just outside Paso Robles, Sensorio transports you to another world. When you arrive, you’re greeted by live music and a selection of food and drinks to purchase. If you do the VIP experience, you’ll have a private table on the terrace overlooking the Field of Light and a VIP-only bar. While there are quite a few people there, there’s enough space that it never felt crowded anywhere on the grounds.
You can’t see or even really hear the freeway and as the sun goes down the hills transform into an ocean of rainbow lights. It’s fun to watch the colors appear as it gets dark, and I would definitely recommend coming back after you’ve explored the rest of the exhibition to see the full transformation when it’s truly dark out.
The second exhibit you’ll come to is the Light Towers, composed of over 17,000 wine bottles! These pay tribute to the 200+ wineries in Paso Robles. Music plays from the towers, creating an otherworldly experience. These lead you to the Fireflies (my husband’s favorite one!) and the “Gone Fishing” exhibits. As the wind flows through the valley, the Fireflies sway in the breeze, creating the illusion of thousands of fireflies playing among the trees.
Next you’ll find the Fiber Optic Symphonic Orchestra (FOSO), Sensorio’s newest installation. These columns of light are synchronized to music, making you feel like you’re in the middle of an orchestra as it plays. There is tiered seating nearby, providing the perfect spot to watch and try and pick out each instrument as the colors change. If you fall in love with it, the soundtrack is also available on vinyl at their merch truck!
Finally, the Woven Glow leads you to Dimensions! Dimensions was one of my favorites, comprised of huge geometric sculptures that cast intricate shadows throughout the space. A few of the sculptures spin, allowing you to make dizzying patterns of light. Some are open to go inside of, transporting you into stunningly beautiful worlds of light.
Overall, I had a wonderful time at Sensorio and would definitely recommend for a romantic moonlit date or a family night out. Just be ready for a bit of walking!
