Things to Do on the Central Coast – Memorial Day Weekend 2021

I bet you are excited to get out and celebrate this Memorial Day Weekend, since last year we were all advised not to travel. But this year we are in luck! Vaccines have become available, and California is getting (somewhat) back to business.

While a lot of annual events are still on hold we thought we would give our readers a list of some things that we are looking forward to partaking in on the Central Coast this Memorial Day Weekend. If you are up for something new this is your opportunity to broaden your reach and join in on all the fun. Maybe we will see you there!

San Luis Obispo – Buen Dia Photography Hikes

Are you like me who decided to bite the bullet and buy that swanky DSLR camera but never bothered to read the instructions to be able to use it to its full potential? Well, lucky for us, it’s not too late! As you know, the Central Coast is packed with beautiful hiking trails that make professional photographers all over the globe envious! Now is the perfect time to put on your hiking boots, strap on your camera and learn how to use that camera with a professional at hand to teach you all the tricks!

Paso Robles – Country Farm & Craft Market

Art, art and more art! I am running out of walls for all the art I own, but that doesn’t seem to stop me!

Have you been to Paso Robles lately? If not, this is your opportunity to, not only see some fantastic art, but check out all the fun little boutiques that are popping up there! It’s become one of my favorite little destinations to buy a friend or family member an unusual gift.

I love and appreciate handcrafted art and goods. There doesn’t seem to be anything more pleasing to me than finding some one-of-a-kind, homemade gift or trinket to display on your mantle (or wall, bookshelf, you name it, I’ll display it!)

I highly recommend giving this Craft Market a try. For more information on this event happening on Saturday, May 29th, click the link!

Cal Poly – Electronic Music Showcase

Are you missing out on the music scene? Do you want to support the students of Cal Poly’s work without worrying about being in a crowded space? Here is your opportunity!

When I came across this event, I couldn’t help but read on. What is an Electronic Music Showcase? I guess now I am really showing my age! The truth is I am in the “granny” stage of life but I long to stay current.

So, I will definitely be partaking in this online concert event that is only $5 but proves to be worth more than this minimal price. Cal Poly music design students get to showcase their work as described on the website:

“The concert will feature premieres of original student-produced music that explores a variety of ways to create and transform electronic sounds.

Students from the Music Department’s Sound Design classes have collaborated with Composition Forum Club members to produce new works ranging from lo-fi grooves and video game music, to experimental soundscapes and pop.

The music will be synced with video games designed by members of Cal Poly’s Game Development Club and media by Art and Design students.”

I’m finding this so interesting that I just have to experience it myself! To purchase tickets or learn more about this Cal Poly event click the link!

Morro Bay – Art in the Park

I’ve always been a fan of the Art in the Park in Morro Bay. I have bought something beautifully handcrafted every time I’ve gone. Of some of my favorite purchases are, a delicate, porcelain ceramic wall vase which hangs outside of my front door, a lovely hand-crafted necklace made with pressed flowers that I get a ton of compliments on every time I wear it, and a sweet little painting I have sitting on a bookshelf…

If I haven’t convinced you how great this little gathering of artists in the park is, I have done a good job of reminding myself that this is where I will be headed on Memorial Day Weekend! For more information about Art in the Park click the link here!

Arroyo Grande – Support Local Businesses

If you have only been to the Village in Arroyo Grande for the Strawberry Festival or to go out to dinner, you are missing out on a lot of sweet little boutiques and some good quality shopping. In recent years there have been a good amount of lovely shops popping in.

The best part about Arroyo Grande Village is that you can keep the kids occupied in the parks, the wooden swing bridge and of course, roosters! We all know how hard the pandemic has been on the small businesses in our hometowns, so why not help preserve our local businesses by taking a stroll down the quaint main street in Arroyo Grande? That’s where you will most likely see me!

Pismo Beach – Take a Hike

Have you been to the preserve yet? Why? Now is the time to get out to see all the beauty of the Central Coast from the top of the hiking trails overlooking Pismo Beach! The hills are still green and this spring the wildflowers are a sight to see!

Time to walk off all the extra calories we have all been snacking on during our time being shut in! Get out this coming Memorial Day Weekend by hiking some of the most beautiful trails in California!

Atascadero – Faces of Freedom Veteran’s Memorial

Last but not least, let’s not forget what this weekend is about, our veterans who have served our country. The Faces of Freedom Memorial has done justice in creating a beautiful place to remember the service of our veterans.

There is a “Hero’s Wall” with the names of over 200 fallen soldiers from San Luis Obispo County, a “Pathway to Freedom” with engraved bricks leading up to the wall, and a stunning statue that can only be fully appreciated in person.
